Having a sick baby is NO FUN! I think all moms can agree with this.
I know there are many things much worse than a stuffy nose, but when your babies are sick, it makes you feel so helpless as a mother.
I want to tell you about a little product that I have found that will help your snotty baby (and you) get some relief.
When I first heard about the NoseFrida, I was honestly totally grossed out.
And I am a nurse, so that says a lot.
It’s just something about having my baby’s boogers potentially being purposefully sucked inside my mouth that made my stomach churn.
However, after hearing so many moms talk about how great it is (and it being on sale at the drug store), I decided to break down and get one…just in case.
The NoseFrida just sat in the cabinet, unused, kinda starting at me every time I opened the door. Almost as to taunt me.
I really couldn’t get used to the idea. I even thought about just giving it away to a friend who is about to have a baby in a few months. It would make a really great gift.
What is the NoseFrida???
The NoseFrida is a handy little device that acts as a nasal aspirator for babies with stopped-up noses.
It comes with a little bottle of saline to help loosen everything up.
It also has a piece that goes into the child’s nostril attached to a straw-like end that you suck on to pull the mucous from their noses.
Not to worry, though. The inventor of this fine piece of equipment thought to put a small filter inside to protect you from getting anything in your mouth.
There were even a few extra filters for later. Sounds great, right?
I don’t know about you, but I have never had any luck with those bulb-type nose suckers.
Except the ones that you get at the hospital when you have a baby- those are fantastic, but you can’t use them forever. They can get pretty nasty, pretty quickly.
Any other kind that I have bought have left a lot to be desired, specifically suction. I can’t ever get them to get anything out!
And there’s nothing worse than fighting a sick baby to get that thing in their nose and get nothing out.
I was really unsure about this NoseFrida thing, but I’m really glad I decided to give it a shot.
A few nights ago, my 2 year old was having trouble sleeping due to a stuffy nose (she had croup).
Her little body was so restless from trying to breathe which made her just miserable.
I, in turn, was also miserable.
I would have done anything in that moment to help her get some much needed rest, so I broke down and pulled it out of the cabinet. NoseFrida to the rescue!
I will have to admit, when I put the straw in my mouth, I gagged a little.
It was more about the thought than anything else. But when I actually put it in her little nose and sucked on it, WOW!
That’s all I can really say about it! It worked better than any other nasal aspirator that I have EVER used! And having 4 kids, that says a lot!
It pulled out the thickest, grossest mucous in just a few pulls on the straw.
And despite what I believed was going to happen, it all stayed right around the bottom of the little container and didn’t even get close to the straw.
It had complete suction. No air leaks or anything to hinder it’s ability to work.
Is it hard to clean???
In a word….Nope! The little booger container just snaps apart, and you can clean it with warm, soapy water. Piece of cake!
Anybody with a 2 year old can vouch for the fact that they are not the most cooperative patients, especially when they are sick.
They are not usually cooperative when everything is going right, so you can imagine they might be a little (or a lot) combative when you are trying to suck their nose out with a straw.
Because I had to hold her with one arm, and the NoseFrida with the other, it was a little hard to maneuver.
She kept trying to pull the straw away, and my hands were tied up, so it was a little difficult.
You really could use an extra set of hands for this, but it was really no more difficult than trying to use one of the old bulb aspirators.
All Things Considered…
Honestly, the IDEA of the NoseFrida is still a little gross.
But JUST the idea.
The actual product is pretty great! And I was told that there’s actually NO WAY for the boogers to get into the straw, i.e. my mouth.
After using the product, I would have to agree. It seems highly impossible that anything could get all the way in there.
It would have to be some massive stuff, and I don’t think their little sinuses could hold that much.
Immediate relief is what we got from the NoseFrida! As soon as her little nose was clear, she went back to sleep and stayed asleep.
So, if you’re straddling the fence on this product, go ahead and get one. The results far outweigh the grossness of actually using it. It’s really not like it seems, I promise.
And getting your little one relief would be worth it even if it was. I only wish I’d tried it sooner.
